Every source Federal Index reads, what kind of source it is, how many documents are held from it, and the date it last returned a successful read. Most are government publishers; 5 are access services that carry a government’s record, and they are labelled as such. This page is generated from the corpus itself: no row is written by hand, and a source appears only once it is producing documents.
The source rows on this page hold 74,895 of them. 615 city-council records are kept out of the county figure. The homepage, the demo and this page state the corpus total from this one measurement, beside this date.

Where coverage stops today
The boundary is published with the same prominence as the rows above, so a reader can check both. These layers are on the roadmap, in the order customers operate in them; the Coverage Commitment is the binding version and requires written notice when any of it changes, including if coverage is ever reduced.
- State administrative codes. Federal Index reads state legislation in all 50 states and D.C. That is not the same as every state agency’s administrative register, which is on the roadmap and not yet live.
- Counties beyond the published list. The county sources above cover the governments named on the published county list, not every county in the United States.
- City, town and village governments. Outside the Coverage Commitment; the city council agendas above are read as early signals, not as coverage.
- Special districts, school districts and tribal governments. On the roadmap; not monitored today.

Access services, and why they are named separately

A government publisher issues the record. An access service carries that record to Federal Index, usually normalized and always one step removed. Both are legitimate, and they are not the same thing, so each is labelled.
- CourtListener v4 — Operated by the Free Law Project, a nonprofit. Opinion records — court, case and date, linked to the opinion — are retrieved via CourtListener; the authoritative record is the issuing court's.
- LegiScan — A private company that aggregates state legislatures into one feed; its data is used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. The underlying record is each state's own.
- County Legislation (Legistar/Granicus) — A Granicus product; a vendor that hosts legislative records on a county government's behalf. The record is the county's.
- Open States v3 — Operated by Plural, a company that standardizes state legislative data. The underlying record is each state's own.
- Municipal Meetings (PrimeGov/OneMeeting) — A vendor that hosts meeting agendas on a government's behalf. The record is the government's.
Where the underlying official record is addressable, it is linked alongside the service it was read through. Opinion text retrieved through CourtListener is attributed to CourtListener and to the issuing court, as its terms of use require. State legislative data from LegiScan is used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.
What each date means
Six distinct concepts, kept distinct
“Last updated” can mean any of six different events, so Federal Index does not use it. Each of these is a separate fact, and only the ones that can be measured are published.
- Source checked — the last time Federal Index polled the source, whether or not anything came back.
- Source last read — the last time a poll returned documents successfully. This is the column in the tables above.
- Published — the date the issuing authority published the document. This one belongs to the government.
- Indexed — when the document entered Federal Index and became findable.
- Briefing written — when Federal Index generated analysis about it.
- Reviewed — when a person at Federal Index checked that analysis. Only this one may be described as verified.
Connected, not producing
Federal Index has connections to 14 further sources that are not returning documents. They contribute nothing to any coverage statement on this site. They are listed because a register that hid its own gaps would not be a register.
